Monero v0.18.5.0 Released: SOCKS v5 Support Added, UPnP Removed

By DeusOp - News

The Monero development team has officially released version 0.18.5.0, a recommended update that brings significant connectivity improvements and backend stability fixes to the privacy-focused cryptocurrency network. This release is now available for download across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and FreeBSD platforms.

Key Features and Improvements

The standout feature of this release is the addition of SOCKS v5 proxy support for both the Monero daemon and wallet. This allows users to route their Monero traffic through SOCKS proxies, enhancing flexibility for privacy enthusiasts and those connecting from restrictive networks.

Other major changes include:

  • Removal of UPnP Support: The daemon no longer relies on Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) for port mapping, simplifying the network architecture and reducing potential attack vectors.
  • Bug Fixes: Several critical issues have been resolved, including fixes for shutdown hangs in the daemon and improved exception handling to prevent crashes during high-load scenarios.
  • Performance Enhancements: The transaction pool’s get_complement() function has been optimized for faster performance when handling large requests.

Technical Updates

For developers and advanced users, this release introduces several technical refinements:

  • ZMQ Integration: New restricted RPC modes have been added to the ZeroMQ interface, allowing for more secure monitoring of transaction pool events, specifically for stem-phase transactions.
  • Wallet Security: Proof validation has been hardened, and a new sanity check ensures that change addresses are correctly formatted. Users can also now skip the automatic refresh after multisig imports if desired.
  • Architecture Support: Official build support has been added for the LoongArch architecture, expanding Monero’s compatibility with emerging processor designs.
